In May 2003, CSIC signed an agreement with the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands for the the management of the Cap Salines Lighthouse as a Coastal Research Station operated by the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA). The conversion of Cap Salines Lighthouse into a Coastal Research Station is a milestone in coastal research for Spain, where there are no other comparable facilities while there are several of these stations available for research in terrestrial ecosystems. The Cap Salines Research Station is located in a pristine coastal area of Mallorca within a recently established Marine Reserve. The rebuilding of these facilities into a Research Station has required a major investment not only for the conversion of the building into labs and housing, but also because of the construction of outside installations such as experimental tanks and greenhouses and the purchase of laboratory equipment and monitoring instrumentation. This project has been made possible thanks to a generous donation by the BBVA foundation within the framework of a larger program of research on coastal system conservation with the support of CSIC and the Government of the Balearic Islands.
