New specific agreement

On June 2, 2008, the new specific agreement between the CSIC and the UIB was signed, whereby IMEDEA was restructured into four departments: Biodiversity and Conservation, Ecology and Marine Resources, Global Change Research, and Marine Technologies, Operational Oceanography and Sustainability. , to which was added the General Services area, pending structuring.
In 2008, as a result of the preparation of the 2010-2013 Strategic Plan, the General Services area was structured into Administration Services, Research Support, Maintenance and Infrastructure, and Information and Communication Technologies. In addition, a Singular Facilities Service is established for the management of the IMEDEA experimental stations, and the IMEDEA Library is consolidated thanks to the technical and human support of the UIB Library and Documentation Service.


Completion of building works

At the end of 1999, the works were completed and the building was occupied by part of the IMEDEA staff. For the first time since its foundation in 1986, IMEDEA has its own headquarters. Until then, its staff was located, in a dispersed manner, in the different Departments and dependencies of the UIB.


Segregation of the Department of Interdisciplinary Physics

On August 2, the CSIC and the UIB modified their Collaboration Framework Agreement and agreed, based on the recommendations of the Evaluation Panel of the IMEDEA Action Plan 2006-2009, the segregation of the Department of Interdisciplinary Physics, which became an Institute of Interdisciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC).

The rehabilitation works of the building begin.


New building

The new annex building was officially inaugurated on June 2, 2008 with the presence of the president of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, Mr. Francesc Antich i Aguiló, the president of the CSIC, Dr. Rafael Rodrigo, the rector of the UIB, Dr. Montserrat Casas, and the mayor of Esporles, Mr. Miquel Ensenyat.


Building opening

On September 25, the official inauguration of the building takes place, with the presence of the Minister of Science and Technology, Ms. Anna Birulés i Bertran, the president of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, Mr. Francesc Antich i Aguiló, the president of the CSIC, Dr. Rolf Tarrach Siegel, the rector of the UIB, Dr. Llorenç Huguet i Rotger, and the mayor of Esporles, Mr. Jaume Pou i Reinés.


Agreement creating the IEA

The IMEDEA began its journey on April 16, 1986, when the Parliament of the Balearic Islands unanimously approved the Proposal not of Law R.G.E. 528/86, with the following text: «That the Government of the Balearic Islands, through the Ministry of Education and Culture, establish contact with the Higher Council for Scientific Research and with the University of the Balearic Islands to collaborate institutionally and financially in establishing the Institute for Advanced Study.


IMEDEA creation

En fecha 19 de junio de 1995 se establece un nuevo convenio específico entre la UIB y el CSIC, por el cual se reestructura el IEA, que pasa a denominarse Instituto Mediterráneo de Estudios Avanzados (IMEDEA), que se constituye en dos Departamentos: Recursos Naturales y Física Interdisciplinar.
En diciembre de 1995 se firma un convenio entre el CSIC y el Ayuntamiento de Esporles (Mallorca), por la cual este Ayuntamiento otorga al CSIC la cesión por 99 años del edificio y terreno colindante que ocupan las antiguas escuelas municipales (Ses Escoles Velles), comprometiéndose el CSIC, a su cargo, a la rehabilitación del edificio y a la ubicación, en el mismo, del IMEDEA. Posteriormente se llega a un acuerdo por el cual el CSIC adquiere, en propiedad, el edificio y el terreno.
