Esporles, June 20, 2022. On June 23 at 11:00 (GMT+2: Vigo, Barcelona, Paris) we will get back to the cycle of joint seminars with CEAB, ICM, ICMAN and IIM entitled "Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research", this time jointly organized as IMEDEA New Frontiers webinar's series.

TITLE: The rapidly changing global and ocean carbon sinks

SPEAKERDr. Pep Canadell (Chief Research Scientist in the CSIRO Climate Science Centre, Australia)

ABSTRACTAs human activities continue to emit an always growing quantity of greenhouse gases, terrestrial vegetation and oceans are responding in unprecedented ways to changes in both atmospheric composition and climate. How carbon-climate feedbacks develop in the future and affect the strength of the carbon sinks will determine the level of mitigation required to stabilize the global climate system. I’ll provide an overview of the current state of the carbon cycle, the role of the oceans in modulating the concentrations of atmospheric CO2, and the future evolution of the carbon sinks under different warming scenarios.

BIOGRAPHY: Pep is a Chief Research Scientist in the CSIRO Climate Science Centre and Executive Director of the Global Carbon Project, a global consortium of scientists under the umbrella of Future Earth and a scientific partner of the World Climate Research Programme. The GCP studies the impact of human activities on the carbon cycle and other biogeochemical cycles, and its associated changes in the climate system. Pep focuses on collaborative and highly integrative research to develop regional and global budgets and trend analyses of the main greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. He also studies the size and vulnerability of Earth’s carbon pools, carbon-climate feedbacks, and pathways to decarbonization to stabilize the climate, which include land-based carbon sequestration and negative emissions. He focuses on developing robust understanding of biogeochemical cycles to constrain climate projections and mitigation efforts to stabilize the climate system.
