IMEDEA launches a marine and coastal conservation summer school for young researchers

• The program will kick off in the summer of 2024, allowing young students to immerse themselves in the world of research, exploring coastal and marine ecosystems.

 

 

IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) has designed the educational program "IMEDEA Summer School: Interdisciplinary Science for Marine and Coastal Conservation in a Changing World," scheduled to take place from October 20th to 26th, 2024. This initiative is specifically tailored for postgraduate students in the early years of their scientific careers, from any country worldwide.

IMEDEA's summer school places special emphasis on interdisciplinary research and will be based on state-of-the-art methodologies to comprehensively explore coastal and marine systems in the Balearic Islands. Using a hybrid approach, IMEDEA Summer School will integrate practical research with theoretical foundations from various disciplines, including oceanography, marine and coastal ecology, and marine governance. Participants will employ advanced techniques such as network analysis, satellite data analysis, and artificial intelligence to address complex data. Moreover, they will gain advanced knowledge and research skills to tackle significant environmental challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable resource management in iconic ecosystems.
Furthermore, program participants will have the opportunity to firsthand experience the host research institute, IMEDEA, where they will explore applications of artificial intelligence in marine sciences. The course will culminate in an expedition to the iconic Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Cabrera Archipelago, a protected area where participants can observe and study the complexities of interconnected coastal and marine systems across multiple fields of study.

The course is specifically designed for master's and doctoral students, as well as early-career postdoctoral researchers deeply committed to advancing scientific knowledge in support of the conservation of marine and coastal systems.

Program Overview

The summer school consists of three main modules, including morning scientific seminars and afternoon practical sessions:

Module 1: Coastal Processes and Their Impact on Marine Ecosystems

Module 2: Dynamics of Coastal Ecosystems: Nature, Physics, and Human Interaction

Module 3: Integrative Studies in Marine and Coastal Ecosystems

 

Additionally, participants will embark on two field trips: one to the Cabrera National Park and another to the hosting research institute IMEDEA, located in the town of Esporles.
