100xCiencia.8 arrives in Palma de Mallorca to address digital and environmental challenges.

18/09/2024

From October 9 to 11, 2024, Palma de Mallorca will host the prestigious 100xCiencia.8 event, organized by two centers of scientific excellence: the Institut Mediterrani d'Estudis Avançats (IMEDEA) and the Institute of Interdisciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC), both awarded the "María de Maeztu Excellence" seal. In collaboration with the SOMMa Alliance, this event will bring together renowned scientists to explore solutions to global challenges through interdisciplinary science and complex systems analysis.

Islands of Knowledge in a Complex World in Transition

100xCiencia.8 will focus on the environmental and digital challenges facing today's society, seeking sustainable solutions through scientific collaboration. With an emphasis on the importance of scientific evidence for responsible decision-making, the event will promote dialogue between experts from various disciplines.

The program will include discussions on critical topics such as the complexity of the global economy, the transformation of ecosystems due to climate change, and biodiversity loss. The event will also highlight the importance of involving society in science to create collective awareness and joint actions towards a sustainable future.

A Program Addressing the Complexity of Global Systems

The event will kick off on Wednesday, October 9, with a public session titled "Transformative Dialogues: Facing the Challenges of a Complex World in Transition," at the Club Diario de Mallorca

Presented and moderated by Luis Quevedo, a prominent Spanish science communicator, journalist, and filmmaker known for making science accessible to the general public through various media, the event will feature speakers Ángel Amores (IMEDEA) and Ernesto Estrada (IFISC), who will discuss the role of science in addressing global challenges.

This event is free and open to the general public (until full capacity is reached).

Over the course of three days, attendees will participate in closed sessions, roundtables, and keynote presentations, including those by Stefan Thurner, an expert in complex systems, and Karina Von Schuckmann, an oceanographer specializing in ocean climate monitoring. There will also be opportunities for networking, with themed lunches and dinners providing spaces for collaboration and building connections among participants.

The Importance of Interdisciplinary Science

100xCiencia.8 is a unique opportunity for the SOMMa Community to discuss and analyze how interdisciplinary research can tackle the most pressing problems of our time. From optimizing the green and digital transition to conserving biodiversity, the event promises to bring fresh ideas and innovative approaches for a sustainable future.
