The European Researcher's Night returns to Palma!

On Friday, September 27, the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB) will join the celebration of European Researchers’ Night in Palma with a series of activities designed to showcase the work of its scientific and technical staff and how their advancements are transforming our daily lives.

This year, IMEDEA will have two freely accessible venues for the public:

CaixaForum Palma (17:00 - 21:00):

  • Research Fair (Espai D, Sala Santiago Rusiñol): Interactive activities for all ages.

    • Sound Experience: 'The Sounds of the Bay': An activity proposed by students from IES Port de Alcudia in collaboration with IMEDEA, involving the placement of a hydrophone at various points along the Alcudia coast to capture different underwater sounds. Attendees can explore marine sounds and their potential impacts on aquatic ecosystems using their own mobile devices through QR codes.

    • Short Documentary: 'From Space to the Mediterranean: Tracking Ocean Currents' (Duration: 7 minutes). IMEDEA will showcase some moments from the researchers’ work.

    • Activity: 'Discover the Power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Object Recognition': Aranzha Lana and Roberto J. Alcaraz from the IMEDEA DataLab present this interactive object recognition activity. Participants will see how AI technology can identify and classify objects in real time, from cells to sharks, and other living beings and everyday items. Attendees can also bring their own objects. Hosted by the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA CSIC-UIB). Activity open until full capacity is reached.

  • Speed Dating (19:00 - 20:00, café): Ring the bell! A dynamic activity where participants rotate between interviews with researchers, spending 7 minutes with each to ask questions about their work. When the alarm rings, participants switch tables to meet other scientists and researchers. This is a great opportunity to learn about various research projects and profiles! Participants include Andrea Antón (IMEDEA), Ana Sanz (UIB & IMEDEA), Ananda Pascual (IMEDEA), Baptiste Mourre (IMEDEA), and Andreu Rotger Vallespir (IMEDEA). Available in Spanish and Catalan.

  • Late Show (20:00, Sala Lluís Domènech i Muntaner): Enjoy micro-talks by research and science specialists on fascinating scientific topics... Research with a humorous twist! In Spanish and Catalan.

    • 'Small Travelers of Great Distances: Revealing the Foraging Journeys of the Smallest Mediterranean Seabird' by Andreu Rotger Vallespir (IMEDEA).

    • 'Sex on Islands' by Giacomo Tavecchia (IMEDEA CSIC-UIB).

    • 'Mitigating Climate Change: From Lost Causes to Solutions?' by Iris Hendriks (IMEDEA CSIC-UIB).

Port de Palma (18:00 - 24:00):

  • A meeting point with the main research centers in the Balearic Islands, where IMEDEA will present activities that invite you to experience the daily life of an oceanographic campaign and dive into the fascinating world of plankton through an exciting plankton race.

We look forward to seeing you!
