Internal Cycle of Seminars at IMEDEA (CISI) consist on a cycle of seminar presentations given mainly by doctoral students, masters and junior postdocs, although it is not closed to other staff, such as visitors and staff, that take place every Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m in the seminar room os IMEDEA.

This represents a great opportunity to learn more about the research carried out at the Institute and to bring those with less experience , the chance of increasing their presentation and public speaking skills. Afterwards, there will be coffee and some biscuits  😉 We strongly encourage you to participate. Join us!

Do you want to participate with a presentation? Please contact the organising team:

Internal Cycle of Seminars IMEDEA - Ashis Mukhopadhyay « Assembly and Dynamics of Soft Matter»

02/11/2023

Abstract

Soft materials are familiar in everyday life with applications ranging from impressive nanodevices to understanding of biological processes.

These materials tend to be disordered, slow to relax, and literally soft so that even thermal fluctuations can strongly influence their structure and dynamics. I will present results from some of our recent work on these systems.

Specifically, I will show (i) the packing and crystallization of micrometer sized plastic balls (colloids) onto a curved liquid-liquid interface, and (ii) how nanoparticles of size even significantly larger than the mesh size of a hydrogel network can move through barrier hopping.

The results have ramification in understanding of biological morphology (e.g., defects on viral capsids) and transport (e.g., navigation of pathogens through mucus).
