Highly motivated and independent Programmer / Software Developer / Data Analyst

Applications are invited for a highly motivated and independent Programmer / Software Developer / Data Analyst to join the Data Lab at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies, IMEDEA (CSIC/UIB), in Mallorca.

 

The Data Lab is a new facility offering support, expertise, and training to the scientific projects of the Institute that require curation and analysis of large sets of data and images, development of accurate and computationally-efficient data-driven models, and integration of mathematical algorithm into image processing.

 

This is an exceptional opportunity for candidates to enhance their knowledge and skills while interacting with a multidisciplinary group of researchers working at the frontline of marine, coastal and island ecosystems research.


ROLE PURPOSE RESPONSIBILITIES 

The post-holder will be primarily responsible for managing the operations of the Data Lab facility of IMEDEA. This will include managing the allocation of the resources of the Data Lab to the support of the various projects of the Institute as well as to the provision of external services. 


Other core tasks will be: 

  1. Providing expertise for the design of pipelines for the analysis of large datasets.
  2. Administering servers and Githubs.
  3. Setting up operating procedure for data security, data administration and performing backups.
  4. Assisting in the maintenance of software and hardware equipment. 
Another primary objective will be to regularly organise short informal training sessions for the staff of IMEDEA. Periodically, the Data Lab will also run more structured hands-on training workshops.

 

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

  • A degree in a highly numerate subject (e.g. computer sciences, mathematics, or physics) or a degree in another subject coupled with extensive relevant experience.
  • Knowledge and experience working in a unix/linux environment.
  • Strong computational skills, particularly in Shell Script, and interpreted languages (e.g. Python, R, Matlab).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in either English/Spanish/Catalan.
  • Creative, solution-oriented and open to challenges.
  • Ability to work within a team.

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

  • A MSc/PhD in computer science, mathematics, physics, computational biology is desired although not strictly necessary.
  • Experience with cluster computing (e.g. CESGA) is a plus.
  • Experience in artificial intelligence tools.
  • Experience providing advice, training and support services.
  • Experience in academia would be a plus.
