The circumnavigation expedition Malaspina 2010 is an interdisciplinary research project whose main objectives are to assess the effects of the global change on the ocean and to explore its biodiversity. For ten months, over 250 researchers on board of Hesperides and Sarmiento de Gamboa vessels carried out an expedition, supervised by Carlos M. Duarte Quesada (IMEDEA, CSIC), who combines senior scientific research and young researchers training, marine science and scientific culture promotion to approach science to the population.

The project is funded by Consolider-Ingenio 2010 programm and is lead by the National Scientific Research Council (CSIC) in collaboration with the Spanish Army and the support of the BBVA foundation.
