Esporles, October 3, 2017. The recent introductions in Europe of Xylella fastidiosa (Xf), a plant pathogen bacterium native from America, are inexorably linked to the international movement of infected plants.

Yet knowledge on the pathways and chronologies of these introductions remain circumstantial.

Here we will show how a disease affecting over 70% of almond trees in Mallorca (Spain), initially attributed to a complex of wood fungi, was indeed triggered by the introduction of Xf around 1996 and its subsequent spread by insect vectors...

Eduardo Moralejo participated in the research and writing of the Risk Analysis for the European territory of the quarantine pathogen, Phytophthora ramorum. Currently is collaborating with the Laboratory of Plant Health of the Balearic Government to reconstruct the epidemic of Almond Leaf Scorch, identify the genetic diversity of Xylella fastidiosa in the Balearic Islands and investigate the varietal tolerance in almonds and grapes.
