Esporles, September 12, 2019.  High frequency radars (HFR) are a fast growing technology included in Coastal Observing systems around the world.

HFR is a cost-effective technology mapping ocean surface currents and wave fields near coastal areas complementing the satellite observations that are less reliable when approaching the coast.

In this work series of Observing System Experiments have been performed to evaluate the capability of a data assimilative high resolution regional model to improve the representation of surface currents in the Ibiza Channel (Western Mediterranean).

The impact of high frequency radar (HFR) observations has been specifically assesed.

The trade-off between different initialization methods after analysis and the employment of HFR radial raw observations, compared to total (u-v) derived currents will be discussed.

Results show the capability of the system to correct surface currents in the Ibiza Channel when using data assimilation.

Seven high resolution simulations will be presented and their results evaluated both from a lagrangian and an eulerian perspective.

A set of 14 drifters deployed in the area during the experiment period has been used as independent data for a lagrangian validation.
