Seamposium: Foraging in a microbial world

On September 16 at 16:00 p.m. (GMT+2: Vigo, Barcelona, Paris) we will get back to the cycle of joint seminars with CEAB, ICM, ICMAN and IIM entitled "Seamposium: Dealing with new frontiers of marine research", this time jointly organized as IMEDEA New Frontiers webinar's series.
ABSTRACT: Predatory flagellates are found in all branches of the Eukaryotic tree of life and they play a key role in ocean microbial food webs as the main consumers of bacteria and picophytoplankton. Their foraging is facilitated by the beating of a flagellum that creates a feeding current. However, predatory flagellates are faced with the fundamental problem that viscosity impedes predator-prey contact in their low Reynold number world. A naked flagellum can only produce a force that is about one order of magnitude too low to account for observed clearance rates. I will show how this apparent paradox has been solved by some of the major groups. I will also show how the diverse flagellar arrangements and beat patterns found among different groups lead to a trade-off between foraging efficiency and predation risk. The presentation will be light in physics and rich in videos and animations demonstrating flagellate foraging.
