Fine-Scale ocean currents from integrated multi-platform experiments and numerical simulations: contribution to the new SWOT satellite mission (FaSt-SWOT)
We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher position in the
Oceanography and Climate Change Department at IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB). This is a
full-time position. The initial appointment will be for one year with the
possibility of an extension for an additional 1.5 years based on satisfactory
performance.
The successful candidate will work on the characterization of the
horizontal and vertical motion associated with ocean fronts in the Balearic Sea
with a range of observational oceanographic
datasets, including in-situ measurements and satellite data as well as numerical
modelling. The appointee will be based at IMEDEA (Mallorca) and will carry out
research in collaboration with researchers at SOCIB and in other international
groups participating in the FaSt-SWOT project. The project offers scope to
investigate ocean fine-scale dynamics and validation of the new SWOT satellite (https://swot.jpl.nasa.gov/).
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to
publish high quality research outputs and present results at national and
international meetings and conferences. The selected candidate will have
an opportunity to participate in field-work as well as in educational and
outreach activities associated with the project.
EDUCATION & DESIRED
EXPERIENCE:
- PhD
in Physical Oceanography.
- Strong computer and programming skills, data
analysis and visualization.
- Experience in the analysis of mesoscale
and/or submesoscale ocean dynamics.
- Experience in ocean modelling and data
assimilation will also be highly valued.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate
effectively and work collaboratively.
- Fluency in both spoken and written English.
- Good communication and interpersonal
skills.
- Publication record appropriate to the
career stage.
ABOUT US
IMEDEA is a joint
research institute of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas
(CSIC) and the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) located in
Mallorca, Balearic Islands (Spain), and recognized as a center of Excellence
Maria de Maeztu. One of the objectives of the Oceanography and Global Change Department
is to study the physical mechanisms that explain the dynamics of the ocean
system in the context of global change. The variability of scales involved,
from meters to thousands of kilometers and from seconds to years, and their
nonlinear interactions, make the understanding of these mechanisms a real
challenge. We address this challenge by combining theoretical, observational
(in situ and remote) and numerical modeling approaches.
The work will be carried out in
close collaboration with the Modelling and Forecasting group at the Balearic
Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB). This group has been
developing over the last years high-resolution numerical tools to simulate the
regional ocean circulation in the Western Mediterranean Sea, both for process
studies and operational predictions.
