Primary production in the northern Algerian Basin was investigated in relation to mesoscale structures during the SHEBEX cruise (May 2015).

Four transects in and south of the Ibiza channel identified an anticyclonic eddy and a zonal front blocking the circulation.

The concentration in chlorophyll-a and nutrients was maximum at the front separating fresh Atlantic Water from resident Mediterranean Water.

This peak is explained by an eastward transport along the front, conveying nutrient from a coastal peak in primary production to offshore.
