Internal Cycle of Seminars at IMEDEA (CISI) consist on a cycle of seminar presentations given mainly by doctoral students, masters and junior postdocs, although it is not closed to other staff, such as visitors and staff, that take place every Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m in the seminar room os IMEDEA.

This represents a great opportunity to learn more about the research carried out at the Institute and to bring those with less experience , the chance of increasing their presentation and public speaking skills. Afterwards, there will be coffee and some biscuits  😉 We strongly encourage you to participate. Join us!

Internal Cycle of Seminars IMEDEA - Amparo Lázaro- «Plant-pollinator interactions in anthropized landscapes.»
Abstract Pollination is an essential process for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, as 87.5% of the flowering plants and one third of the human diet depend on it. However, this essential ecosystem service is severely threatened by pollinator losses, raising important challenges for biodiversity conservation and crop production. Among the many threats to wild pollinators today, land-use changes have been identified as one of the main causes of pollinator declines, and this effect is expected to be accentuated in the following decades as human population increases. I will present the studies conducted in my group to understand how landscape modifications related to land-use changes affect plant and pollinator communities, the structure of plant-pollinator interactions and the provision of pollination services to crops and wild plants. The results of these studies have important implications for the sustainability of anthropized landscapes and for the conservation of pollinators as a key ecosystem service.

Internal Cycle of Seminars IMEDEA - BBC Members «Balearic Biodiversity Center: An Opportunity to Enhance Knowledge and Expertise in Biodiversity in the Balearic Islands»

Abstract 

The Balearic Center for Biodiversity is an initiative aimed at generating knowledge about the rich biological diversity and exceptional natural environment of the Balearic archipelago. This information is crucial for establishing management and conservation policies in the context of global change, ensuring the maintenance of ecosystem services provided by biodiversity to society. The objectives of the CBB are: 1) to strengthen the potential and capacity of the scientific community in the region by generating knowledge and establishing collaborations and synergies; 2) to provide scientific and technical support to government officials and the private sector, and 3) to establish strategic collaborations, services, advice, and training on issues related to biodiversity. The CBB is composed of four units that respond to its scientific, training, and technical support objectives for the scientific community interested in the biodiversity of the Balearic Islands. These units are: the Natural History Collections Unit, the Genomics Unit, the Data Management Unit, and the Training and Scientific Outreach Unit. The human team consists of a multidisciplinary group of researchers and technicians. In this seminar, part of the CBB team will discuss the objectives, composition, and structure of the center, the teams, and services it offers, and how to get in touch with us.
