Actividades para celebrar el Día Internacional de la Mujer y la Niña en la Ciencia

04/02/2024

On February 11th (11F), the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated worldwide. In this context, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 5 "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls," every year we organize a series of activities at IMEDEA to bring the science conducted by researchers at our Institute closer to the reduction of the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) sectors.

IMEDEA Activities Program:

Here are the activities we have prepared at IMEDEA for this year 2024:

Women Leaders in Science

Throughout the week from February 5th to 11th, IMEDEA's social media platforms will be filled with thematic content related to women leaders in the scientific field. On one hand, IMEDEA staff will share through short videos, who the women are who have marked their scientific careers: from pioneering researchers to the most cutting-edge in the present, including professors or professional colleagues.

On the other hand, we will tell the stories of some of these women in brief monographs and images, material that will also be available for download here.

IMEDEA Scientists in the Classroom!: Talks in Educational Centers

Like in previous years, IMEDEA researchers will visit educational centers in Mallorca to share their career paths and experiences in the world of science, as well as their current projects:

  • Tuesday, February 6th: Physicist Ananda Pascual will visit CEIP Llorenç Riber to talk to fifth and sixth-grade students about ocean research and its relationship with the atmosphere (sea temperature, ocean currents, climate change, etc.).
  • Wednesday, February 7th: Ecologist Ana Sanz will be at CEIPIEEM Son Serra to introduce second-grade primary education students to how animal populations function and how to conserve them.
  • Monday, February 12th: Elisabet Verger, a graduate in marine sciences and technologies, will give her talk at CEIP Es Molinar to bring oceanography and marine technologies closer to elementary students.
  • On Friday, March 8th, two IMEDEA researchers, Aina Pons and Elvira Mayol, will participate in a student congress dedicated to the sea and a subsequent round table, organized by IES Capdepera.

The talks have been scheduled through the February 11th website.

Other External Activities:

In addition, IMEDEA researchers and technical staff are invited to participate in joint activities with other entities in the Balearic Islands:

Photo-Networking of the Women in Science Community in the Balearic Islands

The 11F Balears Platform, with the support of other scientific institutions in the Balearic Islands, annually convenes a photo to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and Technology. The goal is to highlight and inspire women in research and technology in the Balearic Islands.

IMEDEA researchers will also be part of this initiative, which this year will be followed by a networking event to promote collaboration and share ideas among this group, research institutions in the region, and the media. The initiative aims to highlight the role of women in these fields collaboratively.

A Date Celebrated Worldwide

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly agreed on February 11th (11F) as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and Technology to recognize the critical role that women and girls play in the scientific and technological world, as well as to recognize girls and young women as drivers of development in our society.

This commemoration aims to make visible the work of women mainly dedicated to STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), thus creating female role models for children that can contribute to the choice of these areas as professional careers, in addition to understanding the different factors that affect the current situation of women in STEM areas to promote practices that lead to their elimination and achieve gender equality in the scientific field.

These activities are mainly celebrated between February 1st and 15th. In Spain, the first edition took place in 2016, with 336 activities being celebrated. IMEDEA joined these celebrations in 2018 with activities and materials aimed at the general public and, in particular, girls.
