A scientific train journey, tours around IMEDEA and the premiere of a short documentary film: our activities for the 2023 Science and Innovation Week

27/10/2023

As is now tradition at this time of year, this November the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA CSIC-UIB) is hosting a series of scientific and outreach activities as part of the Science and Innovation Week. The initiative is supported by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and aims to bring science to a public of all ages, stir interest in knowledge and foster citizen science in different areas through outreach activities.

IMEDEA’s activities for this year’s event include guided tours around the institute, the première of a short documentary film followed by a Q&A session and a scientific journey on an antique wooden train across the Tramuntana Mountain Range.

ALL ABOARD FOR SCIENCE: ENJOY SCIENCE ON A TRAIN JOURNEY TO SÓLLER

11th November

10am - 5:45pm on the Train to Sóller

Around 20 scientists from different public research institutes in the Balearic Islands have come together to organise All Aboard for Science, a unique activity for people of all ages looking to enjoy science aboard the emblematic Sóller Train.

The scientists will share their latest advances and knowledge in a series of mini talks aboard this antique wooden train, on a journey through the Tramuntana Mountain Range, a World Heritage Site. On arrival in Sóller, the public will get the chance to visit some of the area’s major cultural centres, including the Botanic Garden, the Maritime Museum and the Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences. The talks will resume on the return journey to Palma.

In this vein, the initiative first promoted by IMEDEA during the 2021 Science WeekSpeed Dating with Scientists on the Sóller Train’ returns for this year’s event. The pilot trial welcomed around 100 attendees and visitor numbers this year are forecast to triple, thanks to collaboration with other organisations and institutes.

IMEDEA is taking part in the following mini talks this year:

  • The Cleaver Wrasse: Genes and Personality (Margalida Barceló)
  • Conservation Palaeology: Connecting Past and Present for a Better Future (Alejandro Valenzuela)
  • Welcome to the Microbial Jungle! (Óscar Guadayol).

For more information and to download the full programme, please click the event[1]  link.

The activity is aimed at curious adventurers who have a passion for science. Although the talks are outreach activities, they are not suitable for children under 6.

The event is free although attendees must register for tickets.
